When was the track built?
When it opened in 1972 it was hailed as the most sophisticated circuit of its type in the world, with an oval course and multi-configuration road course, and hyped a lot by the Portuguese government as a great touristic attraction along with a real estate project, by hand of the same architect of Estoril.
The hype over its opening faded quickly and the long civil war kept it closed up to 2007.
In 2020 the modification designed by me, with improved safety and a new central section will make it suitable for Formula 1 and it will be added to the Circuit Database.
When was its first Grand Prix?
No F1 GP has ever been held in Angola. This circuit will rotate with the other two of the country for a slot in the World and Continental Championships.
What’s the circuit like?
The only completely new part is the technical section between turn 9 and 14; the rest is the configuration 5 of the original track, where only angles of corners have been amended to extend run-off areas.
It’s a long and fast layout where engine power and low drag will be the key for success.
Improved stands and facilities will guarantee a massive fans participation.
Where is it located?
The Autódromo Internacional de Luanda is located on the south western fringes of the Angolan capital city, close to the Atlantic coast (- 9°00’35”, + 13°05’49”)
