Autódromo Internacional de Luanda – Luanda

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Fictitious (designed by me) – © 2020 AllAlongTheRacetrack

When was the track built?

When it opened in 1972 it was hailed as the most sophisticated circuit of its type in the world, with an oval course and multi-configuration road course, and hyped a lot by the Portuguese government as a great touristic attraction along with a real estate project, by hand of the same architect of Estoril.
The long civil war that plagued Angola from 1975 kept it closed, up to 2007.
It has seen new life with a shorter single-layout version used only for local events since 2021.
Thanks to a new Grade-1 version, designed by me, with improved safety and permanent facilities, international motorsport series and Formula 1 will finally arrive on this spectacular venue.

When was its first Grand Prix?

No F1 GP has ever been held in Angola. This circuit will rotate with the other two of the country for a slot in the World and Continental Championships.

What’s the circuit like?

The part between Turn 15 to Turn 8 has kept the concept of the original Circuit No.5, with some corner angles variations to allow for more run-off areas.
Also the gentle banking in all the long, fast and sweeping corners has been preserved.
The newly design bit is the core of sector 2, with a technical section between Turn 9 and 14, which adds a tight braking zone and a couple of chicanes.
It’s a long circuit, where high-average speeds will be reached and overtaking is possible in plenty of corners. Cars will have low-drag set-ups.
Improved stands and facilities will guarantee a massive participation from fans.

Where is it located?

The Autódromo Internacional de Luanda is located on the south western fringes of the Angolan capital city, close to the Atlantic coast (- 9°00’35”, + 13°05’49”)
