When was the track built?
Opened in 2009 to host the WTCC race, as a 4.5km super-high-speed street course, characterized by long straights and heavy braking chicanes, it was reduced in 2015 to a semi-permanent 3km track, often too tight even for GT and Touring cars.
To attract Formula One, a third variant, designed by me, which combines a bit of both the old one, unravelling through the hotels long straight roads, and the new one, with a redesigned permanent part, including two new chicanes, a completely refurbished paddock buildings and a revisited pit-lane, has been approved and will be ready for 2023, to bring back major motorsport events to this circuit.
When was its first Grand Prix?
The return of Morocco in F1 will begin in 2023; this new track will alternate with the other two for the country to host Continental and World title races.
What’s the circuit like?
It’s technically a street circuit but it offers many overtaking spots thanks to its long and wide straights and chicanes, a wide range of corners, from more typical 90° curves, to high-speed sweeping corners including a long parabolic Turn 3.
The final sector of this layout was the starting line of the old version, but it runs clockwise this time, and it leads to the main straight, with a particular pit and paddock solution, not parallel to it.
Average speeds will be particularly high, as well as temperatures and potentially tyre degradation on a very various type of roads, making it a more challenging track then the layout may suggest.
Where is it located?
On the southern outskirts of Marrakesh, in the Agdal district, around 5km away from the airport (+ 31°35’16”, – 7°59’11”)
