When was the track built?
The city of Lagos was at the center of some rumors in the past for trying to bring Formula 1 on its street, in the Marina area.
No formal project has ever been submitted, and Nigeria never seemed on the radar for a Grand Prix.
Now, thanks to the new organization and to a new permanent circuit, designed by me, located few meters from the Ocean beach, close to the multi-billion real estate project of Eko Atlantic city, the country ambition to become a fixture in the motorsport world will become real.
When was its first Grand Prix?
This will be the first ever F1 GP held in Nigeria. The new circuit will be ready to host a Continental series race in 2023.
What’s the circuit like?
This is probably one of my most extreme designs: 27 turns of any kind and three long straights that will make very hard to find the right set-up, having to choose between perfect balance and top speed.
The first sector has a very tight first chicane, a critical overtaking spot especially at the start, followed by another fast section leading to a very difficult sequence of corners of various radiuses.
The middle sector can be split into two parts: a very tricky snake bit, from T8 to T12, where carrying enough speed without going wide can catch even the most experience driver by surprise.
It is followed by another exciting series inspired by the COTA from Turn 15 leading into T21.
In the final sector it’s Turn 22 that draws the attention, as it is inspired by the old AVUS circuit: a nearly 180° hairpin, with a maximum banking of 28°, that will be extremely interesting to see approached by Formula 1 cars.
It’s followed by a very long straight and a double-apex high-speed corner that leads to a challenging braking zone at T25.
Overtaking is possible in several corners.
Temperatures will normally be on the high side, testing every component and tyres even more than usual.
Where is it located?
On Tarqua Bay’s Lighthouse beach facing the Ocean on the twin island where Eko Atlantic city is being built (6.402864; 3.385972)
