Highlands Circuit – Asmara

Circuit: Fictitious
Layout: Fictitious (designed by me) – © 2021 AllAlongTheRacetrack

When was the track built?

Eritrea has been the venue for sports car races in the 1930s, 40s and probably also 50s mainly in the streets of Asmara, but also in Massaua.
In the 1970s there were also rumors of a permanent track being built but it is only with the new Formula 1 organization announcement that it has become true.
I have designed the circuit in an area just outside the capital, well served by the airport and other city transportation.
It will be one of the highest circuits ever, being located at 2,300m above sea level and it will be able to host more than 100,000 fans a day, thanks to its many modern stands.

When was its first Grand Prix?

This will be the first ever F1 GP held in Eritrea. The new circuit will be ready to host a Continental series race in 2023.

What’s the circuit like?

The layout is very technical, with sector 2 and 3 that are a sequence of turns where the triple apex turn 16-17 catches the eyes.
The first part is probably the only one where overtakes will be easy thanks to straights and heavy breaking corners.
The track will be challenging for engines and set-ups due to its altitude and the need for high max speed and balance in the curves.

Where is it located?

Close to the mountains East of Asmara, very close to the International airport  (15°17’25.5″N; 38°56’41.4″E)
