Sepang International Circuit – Sepang

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Actual

When was the track built?

Construction started in 1996 and the design was assigned for the first time to the architect Tilke, who penned a fast and flowing circuit which was dominated by two long straights separated by a unique main grandstand and central fan zone.
It has immediately set a new standard for F1 in terms of layouts and facilities, with the eye-catching main stand, thanks to the massive investment from the government.

When was its first Grand Prix?

The first GP on this track was held in 1999, won by Eddie Irvine in a Ferrari 1-2, after Schumacher’s pole position.

What’s the circuit like?

It is a flowing, high-speed track which is all about getting the car to flow from one corner to the next, tough on tires, due to the wide range of corners and the hard braking at the end of the straights and with temperatures that often reaches 60 degrees Celsius.
It offers many overtake chances and produces often close races and crazy ones when the seasonal monsoon rain hits the track.

Where is it located?

It’s located around 60km south of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and adjacent to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. (+ 2°45’37”; +101°44’12”)
