When was the track built?
The city of Qingdao had an agreement with Indycar to host a race on its street in 2012. A design was never completed and unfortunately the event never took place.
The idea was revamped when the new F1 organization opened new slots for China and thanks to a new layout, designed by me, which will feature permanent pits and paddock and will unravel for 6.4km around the coastline and the skyscrapers, a Grand Prix in Qingdao will finally happen from 2023.
When was its first Grand Prix?
One of the seven Chinese circuits that will rotate in both the Continental and World F1 series, it has never hosted a Grand Prix.
What’s the circuit like?
It is not a common street course: 6,390m long, it has a twisty and narrow first sector, with an extremely difficult sequence of curves just a few meters from the sea. A good part of the lap time will be in the hands of the drivers in this bit.
After that it exploits the super-wide streets of the Chinese city, with long straights, where there will be no risk for wheel-to-wheel action. Pretty much every corner is an overtaking spot.
It combines the high average speeds of Baku with the jaw-dropping surroundings of Singapore.
Like most of street tracks it will be challenging for brakes.
Where is it located?
At Fushansuo Wan, in the marina of the International Sailing Centre, on the coast around 20km south of the airport. (+ 36°03’46”, +120°22’45”)
