Shanghai International Circuit – Shanghai

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Actual

When was the track built?

A massive investment by the city council was agreed to convert a swampland in the north part of the city into a motorsport circuit with top class facilities.
Herman Tilke was chosen to design the track and associated buildings, between April and May 2003.
Inaugurated in 2004, it has hosted F1 races, Superbike, WTCC and other series on various layouts.

When was its first Grand Prix?

Debut race was in 2004, won by Rubens Barrichello, who also started on pole, on Ferrari.

What’s the circuit like?

The track layout has been inspired by Chinese culture, with the designers claiming to have drawn inspiration from the Chinese ‘shang’ symbol.
This has made it very twisty, with at least to never-ending corners not always liked and very few overtake spots, although the two straights, including the back one of 1.2km, are normally able to provide some.

Where is it located?

In the Jiading district in north west Shanghai, served by both the city airports. (+ 31°20’25”, +121°13’16”)
