Penbay International Circuit – Taiwan

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Fictitious (designed by me) – © 2021 AllAlongTheRacetrack

When was the track built?

It was Taiwan’s first international-standard circuit famous for its huge seaplane-shaped viewing platform that utterly dominates the skyline at the southern portion of the track.
It opened in 2011, winding its way between some of the former military buildings and under the viewing platform, after many debates over the historical value of those facilities.
The original 3.527 km layout featured modern pit and hospitality facilities but in 2019 the owners pulled out of the project.
Shortly after that the new F1 Organization took over and extended the circuit to FIA Grade-1 standards, with a new layout designed by me, eliminating the oval and karting area.

When was its first Grand Prix?

The new circuit will be ready for the new F1 in 2023 and will host the first ever GP in the country.

What’s the circuit like?

The main straight is the only element of the original track.
After turn 1 there is a completely new fast section, with a spectacular high-speed double bend at T3-T4. T6 will also be the best overtaking spot.
In the final sector is where most of the challenges are: cars returns to the old circuit area after the chicane T8; the long and gently banked T9-10-T11 are very complicated due to a line that is tough to keep that leads to an important and trick braking zone before the banked T12.
The sequence between T15 and T20 is also challenging as the right balance between corner speed and precision need to be found.
In the first two sectors low-drag set-ups are required and in the last one good traction will be key to deliver lap times.

Where is it located?

In Dapeng Bay in south-western Taiwan, close to Kaohsiung City’s Kaohsiung International Airport, connected to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur
(+ 22°27’08”, +120°28’58”)
