When was the track built?
Opened in 2010, after a long time effort from Ecclestone to bring a GP in the country, and designed by Tilke, it has funding issues from the beginning as it was expected to be part of a village of hotels, restaurants and marinas to create a harbour-side atmosphere similar to Yas Marina, Valencia street course or Monaco.
But budget for such works never arrived and the circuit suffered the departure of F1 after only 4 years.
Thanks to the new F1 organization it will be part again of the circus.
When was its first Grand Prix?
In 2010, won by Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari. The circuit will rotate with other two in this country to host a GP.
What’s the circuit like?
It is a Tilke’s typical mix of overtaking-friendly sharp hairpins, very long and wide straights plus some quick corners.
The pit entrance will be modified for the 2023 GP.
The track offers several overtake spots in sector 1 and 2, while in the last one drivers must be extremely precise and cars well balanced to have enough speed on the main straight.
Where is it located?
Yeongam is around 400 kilometres south of Seoul and near the port city of Mokpo. The nearest airports are at Muan and Gwangju (+ 34°44’17”, +126°24’53”)
