When was the track built?
The Kingdom of Bhutan and the city of Gelephu are looking to attract tourism and global businesses through sustainable development and rich cultural heritage.
In this context a new Formula 1 racetrack, designed by me, surrounded by new museums, entertainment and retail venues, a sky resort and green apartments will be built close to Gelephu Mindfulness City estate project.
Set in the beautiful scenery of the Himalaya range, this will surely put Gelephu and Bhutan on the World map and demonstrate that green architecture is feasible.
It is set to be ready from late 2023.
When was its first Grand Prix?
The new circuit will be ready for the new F1 in 2023 and will host the first ever GP in the country.
What’s the circuit like?
The circuit is very modern in its facilities and layout.
It is shaped by the mountainous terrain and it has its highest point in Turn 1, and it also has a decline from left to right.
The main straight is 40 meters uphill, which will make the first corner tricky and spectacular, as it change incline midway. It is followed by a breathtaking downhill snaky section up to Turn 6.
Two long sweeping and slightly banked corners lead to the final sector, which is mainly full-throttle and with three high-speed bends.
The final chicane is insidious with a particular line, critical to get good speed on the following straight.
It has namely 13 corners, but it is a very technical circuit; all corners and straights are characterized by elevation changes and humps similarly to Portimao.
Possible rain showers might make racing even more challenging.
Where is it located?
In Gelephu, before the Himalayan mountains, few miles north of the Indian border, 100 kilometers from Guwahati airport. (26°55’16.7″N, 90°22’44.7″E)
