When was the track built?
Events organised by the Madras Motor Sport Club had taken place in the Chennai area, which has always been the cradle of Indian motorsport, since the 1970s on a variety of temporary courses.
Thanks also to the success of Formula Maruti, India’s first home-built single seater series, it was decided to create the first permanent racetrack, with the support of FIA.
The 3.7 km layout was completed in 1990 and since then it has hosted a wide range of events, mainly domestic, but including also Formula 3.
With the new Formula 1 organization, due to its heritage, it has been included in the circuit database for a slot in the calendar and it has been upgraded by me with some minor layout changes and facilities improvements.
When was its first Grand Prix?
It will rotate with the other Indian circuit for a calendar place in F1, starting from 2023, and it will be the first ever on this venue.
What’s the circuit like?
The new layout has an extended main straight and a sharper first corner to facilitate overtakes.
Then the concept of the circuit has been kept, with a sequence of mainly fast curves, although some of them have been squared a bit to match F1 standards.
A circuit where constant lap times, driving accuracy and car balance will be crucial to success.
Where is it located?
At Sriperumbudur near to Chennai in India’s Tamil Nadu state; Chennai International Airport is around 45 minutes to the West. (+ 13°00’02”, + 79°59’21”)
