Moscow Raceway – Moscow (Москва)

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Actual

When was the track built?

Plans for a permanent F1 circuit in the Moscow area started with the new century with a proposal in the island in the Molzhaninovsky, but the commercial offer between the city and Ecclestone was never reached.
The idea became reality in 2008, when the new area was identified and Tilke involved in the design; but again Ecclestone pulled out of the agreement, the circuit was completed by new contractors but was removed from the calendar.
Completed in 2012 it was replaced by Sochi to host the first ever Russian GP.
It will be, starting from 2023 with the new organization, in the rotation to have F1 races finally.

When was its first Grand Prix?

Russia has 2 places in the Continental and 1 in the World series; this is one of the eight circuits that will rotate for those spots.
It will be the first ever GP on this venue.

What’s the circuit like?

It is quite a typical Tilke’s track, with a challenging sequence of turns after the start, most of them of wide-radius and fast, where F1 cars can show their balance and speed.
Then there are two straights, with the back one being 1 km long, both wide and followed by a sharp corner that favour overtakes.

Where is it located? Around an hour and a half drive from central Moscow and 20 minutes from Volokolamsk, well served by all three airports of the Capital. (+ 56°00’03”, + 36°15’26”)
