When was the track built?
Built around the complex used for the 2014 Winter Olympics, it was designed by Tilke and built in 2014.
It features permanent pit and paddock facilities and the first half can be used for racing at any time, while the full course continues along public roads.
It has brought F1 to Russia for the first time ever, and it will be included in the database for the new 2023 organization.
When was its first Grand Prix?
Russia has 2 places in the Continental and 1 in the World series; this is one of the eight circuits that will rotate for those spots.
The first race on this venue was in 2014, won starting from pole by Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.
What’s the circuit like?
The most unique characteristic is the almost-roundabout turn just after the start, which push to the limit drivers due to the G force and it also provides a great overtake spot since multiple lines are possible and cars often reach it while dueling after the long main straight.
The rest of the circuit is made of mainly 90° corners, which often have left drivers aloof about them, although some of them and particularly the back straight between turn 10 and 13 have been the scene of many battles.
Where is it located?
In the city of Sochi, in its Olympic Park on the banks of the Black Sea, very close to its International airport. (+ 43°24’29”, + 39°57’22”)
