When was the track built?
Opened in 2010 to be used mainly as a track-day circuit, it became the 8th Russian circuit to be inserted in the database for the new Formula 1.
In order to meet the standard, some modifications has been made both on the layout, longer and with improved safety standards, and on the facilities, with improved pit and paddock buildings and stands, all designed by me.
It is expected to be fully refurbished in 2023.
When was its first Grand Prix?
Russia has 2 places in the Continental and 1 in the World series; this is one of the eight circuits that will rotate for those spots.
It will be the first ever GP on this venue.
What’s the circuit like?
It has kept the original concept of a fast, stop-and-go track; the design is quite simple, although very interesting.
After turn 4 there is an extremely long right-hander, where drivers will need to ration steering and accelerator.
The opposite site right hand turn is sharper with a triple apex.
The circuit features also five chicane-like corners of different angles and speed.
Tyre management will be challenging, especially due to the different consumption between the two sides.
Where is it located? South of the city of Saint Petersburg, around 10 kilometers from its International airport. (+ 59°47’02”, + 30°27’25”)
