Layout: Actual
When was the track built?
Designed by the Yamaha Motor Company, it was inaugurated in May 1975.
There were two circuit variations, one for cars and a second for motorbikes.
The complex was including much wider sporting facilities, although the circuit was constrained by the hillside landscape.
It has been completely renewed to its current layout in 1987, and it has hosted local and international motorsport events.
It will be included for the first time in the Formula 1 database from 2023, with some improvements in the runoff areas.
When was its first Grand Prix?
Japan has 2 places in the Continental and 1 in the World series; this is one of the eight circuits that will rotate for those spots.
It will be the first ever GP on this venue.
What’s the circuit like?
A simple design, with only 12 turns and two long straights, meaning that Formula 1 cars will lap under the minute.
There are still points of interest, particularly the long Estoril-like final corner, crucial for both obtaining a good lap but also to pick up a good tow and attach after the main straight.
Where is it located?
On the island on Honshu, in north Japan. The nearest airport is at Sendai, around half an hour away. (+ 38°08’26”, +140°46’35”)
