Suzuka Circuit – Suzuka

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Actual

When was the track built?

Another Honda-owned circuit, opened in 1962, after Mr. Honda decided that racing was ideal way to promote for his products.
At that time Japan did not have many circuits to do that, so he decided to start building one on its own.
The original layout was more rounded in some corners but it has been modernized through the years keeping its shape.
Thanks to the upgrades in safety, it finally became part of the F1 calendar to never leave it.

When was its first Grand Prix?

Japan has 2 places in the Continental and 1 in the World series; this is one of the eight circuits that will rotate for those spots.
The first F1 GP in Suzuka was won by Gerhard Berger’s Ferrari, in 1987.

What’s the circuit like?

This track is considered iconic for various reasons, starting from its  figure-of-eight shape.
The high-speed track is one of the most challenging, but yet preferred by drivers, thanks to the windy snake section at the beginning, the two hairpins in the central sector and the legendary 130R and Casio chicane, which has been scene of title decisive duels.
Not always easy to overtake but still races around here are always interesting.

Where is it located?

In Ino, just outside Suzuka City in Mie Prefecture. The closest International airport is Nagoya’s Centrair (Central Japan International Airport). (+ 34°50’34”, +136°32’27”)
