When was the track built?
The Piraeus was chosen in 2010 for a massive project of land reclamation and environment friendly real estate, with a Renewable Energy Park, that was supposed also to host a Formula One circuit.
Designed by Papatheodorou and promoted by the political establishment it was never developed due to the financial struggle of the country.
With the new F1 organization it will finally take life and bring a Grand Prix to Greece.
It will be a mix between the Monaco feel, with the new luxury marina and the tunnel, and the Hanoi circuit, thanks to the mix of permanent track and public roads.
When was its first Grand Prix?
The new circuit will be ready for the new F1 in 2023; it will rotate with Chalandritsa to host the Greek GP.
What’s the circuit like?
This project was a pioneer in the street-permanent hybrid; it won’t be the first now but it will still be extremely interesting, with three sectors clearly distinguished.
In the first there is a sequence of fast changes of direction similarly to the COTA; the second is the fastest section, despite never being fully straight, and it features a tunnel, leading to the best overtaking spot at turn 16.
In the final one, traction will be crucial due to slow and sharp corners; particularly in the last one it’s extremely important to have a good speed on the main straight.
Where is it located? In the Piraeus port area, on the west side of the capital of Greece, around 30km from the International airport. (+ 37°56’42”, + 23°37’06”)
