When was the track built?
Built in 1961 as a small 2km circuit, used mainly for minor national competitions, known as Jean Behra circuit, it has been modified multiple times until in 1989 it became a world-class facility that started hosting the French GP from 1991.
Unfortunately, due to its location and the small pit and paddock facilities, Formula 1 abandoned the venue from 2008, despite a redesign of the last corner to improve safety and overtaking.
When was its first Grand Prix?
In 1991, with an illustrious podium of Nigel Mansell, winner on his Williams-Renault, Prost and Senna, after Patrese threw away a pole position with a disastrous start.
It is one of the eight French circuits that will rotate for spots in the European and World Title series.
What’s the circuit like?
Despite having two hairpins at the end of long straights, it has always been difficult overtaking around here; but the new rules should help providing a good spectacle.
Sector 2 is very technical, with its fast corners where it’s very easy to make a mistake that means end of the race against a barrier.
Where is it located?
Close to the cities of Mangy-Cours and Nevers, in central France, two hours away from Clermont-Ferrand airport. (+ 46°51’47”, + 3°09’55”)
