When was the track built?
Syracuse has a long motorsport tradition, started in 1950 with the first, although the first ever GP was held in the following year; there would have been non-titled Formula 1 races until 1967 on the original street course, which was then deemed inadequate to modern standards.
The construction of the permanent circuit, clearly inspired by Monza, started in the 1970s but went through a rollercoaster of issues and it never became a candidate for major motorsport events.
Thanks to the new organization and to a full refurbishment and redesign, made by me, the circuit will come back to life to finally host a Formula One event.
When was its first Grand Prix?
It will be the first ever F1 GP on this venue.
It is one of the seven Italian circuit that will rotate in European Continental Series and World Title.
What’s the circuit like?
The new layout achieve its purpose of having a challenging track, suitable for the most powerful cars, with modern safety and entertainment standards, while respecting its heritage.
It will be raced clockwise, and it will feature more change of directions compared to the more rectilinear original version, but it will keep the original 1km long main straight and plenty of overtaking spots.
There are various points of interest, like the uphill double chicane at Turn 4-5-6 or the ultra-fast one at Turn 11-12-13. The banked turn 8 and 16 also catch the eyes, with the last corner designed to put cars at the highest possible speed into the main straight.
It’s a low-drag track, with high average speeds and also tyre degradation, accordingly to the latest simulations.
Where is it located?
Just outside the city of Syracuse, to the west; Catania airport is the closest, around 50km north. (+ 37°04’19”, + 15°15’19”)
