When was the track built?
A former RAF airfield, built during WWII, it started hosting GPs in 1962 on a 4.8km ring using part of the runway and some connection roads.
From the early 1970s the military banned motor racing until they occupied the site, in 1990.
Since then it went through a series of extensions and refurbishment making it a permanent 3.4 km course, not using any of the runways.
With the new F1 organization a further upgrade has been designed by me, using part of the existing racetrack and reclaiming the whole airfield area for a grade 1 circuit with new pit and fans facilities.
When was its first Grand Prix?
It will be the first ever GP in this country.
It will rotate with Lake Torrent circuit in the European Continental Series.
What’s the circuit like?
The first sector, already part of the existing track, with its sequence of sweeping and winding curves lead to the new section, going through the old airfield, with three straights and many overtaking areas.
For the final sector it goes back to the current circuit, although chicane 17 and the final two corners have been redesigned, and the pit entrance as well.
The new version is more complete, challenging and definitely suitable for Formula 1.
Where is it located?
It’s just outside Downpatrick in County Down, with both Belfast airports around an hour away. (+ 54°18’29”, – 5°34’10”)
