Nemuno žiedas (New Neman Ring) – Kaunas

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Fictitious (designed by me) – © 2021 AllAlongTheRacetrack

When was the track built?

The area has been used since the 1960s, with a road course called Neman Ring, for local motorbike and car racing.
The new permanent circuit has been built in the late 1980s and modernized in 2003 but its poor safety record unfortunately hasn’t changed making impossible for international series to add it to their calendar.
With F1 expanding its horizons, it will be transformed again to meet the FIA Grade-1 standards with a new design, made by me, and a wonderful pit building.

When was its first Grand Prix?

It will be the first ever race in this country.
It will rotate with Latvia for the 23rd spot in the F1 European Series calendar.

What’s the circuit like?

It has kept the overall shape of the original ring, but the new design definitely added more character.
The first sector is slow and twisty, ideal for good traction and precise drivers, while the other two are faster, creating opportunities also for wheel-to-wheel action and overtaking that were almost impossible in the original layout.
Elevation changes are still the best feature, particularly notable in the parabolic and banked Turn 14, which is downhill in the first half and uphill in the other, and in the final three corners.

Where is it located?

In Kačerginė, a small town near Kaunas, around 30km from the nation capital’s airport. (+ 54°55’26”, + 23°43’12”)
