When was the track built?
Hungary and the city of Budapest have a long motorsport tradition that goes back to before WWII.
It was only in the 1980s, though, that the government decided to build a permanent racetrack to host F1, after the idea of reviving the street circuit of Népliget was discarded.
Construction approved and completed in 1985 and first race held in 1986, to be a stable appointment in the calendar, with significant track improvements in 2003.
When was its first Grand Prix?
In 1986, in the middle of one of the most fought seasons; Senna led his Lotus-Renault to take pole position, but it was Piquet who ended up winning the race, in front of his Brasilian rival and his Williams-Honda teammate Mansell.
It will rotate with other two for the national spot in the F1 European Series calendar.
What’s the circuit like?
Often compared to a karting circuit, due to the lack of long straights and the several series of corners to string together, it has offered many interesting races despite the lack of overtaking spots, although the main straight and turn 1 have been improved significantly with the last design.
Engineers opt normally for high levels of downforce; cars with better traction are advantaged here.
Where is it located?
Around 20 kilometres north of Budapest and 30 minutes from its International airport. (+ 47°34’41”, + 19°14’51”)
