Sachsenring – Hermsdorf

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Actual

When was the track built?

The current circuit opened in 1996, although very famous especially among motorcycle drivers, occupies a very small portion of the political and motorsport history of the area.
Since the 1920s an 8.6km long road course has been used for both car and motorbike racing, with restrictions imposed by the Eastern German government, allowing only riders and machinery coming from the communist area.
Despite the high number of fatal accidents, it lasted until the fall of the Berlin Wall, where the need for a modern venue was finally satisfied.
The new racetrack has received the final design from Tilke in 2001.

When was its first Grand Prix?

It will be the first ever Formula 1 race on this racetrack.
It will rotate with other six circuits for the German spot in the F1 European Series calendar.

What’s the circuit like?

The first two sectors are a long sequence of slow or mid-speed turns, with amazing elevations changes offering no rest to drivers, which makes challenging even in MotoGP to overtake.
The final one, characterized by the downhill right-hander plunge, has two hard braking turns, where diving in will be possible.
Set-up will normally be aiming at high downforce.

Where is it located?

Between the towns of Hermsdorf and Hohenstein-Ernstthal, in Saxony.
Dresden is the closest airport, around an hour away (+ 50°47’31”, + 12°41’20”)
