Zagreb Motodrom – Zaprešić

Circuit: Real Project, never developed
Layout: Actual

When was the track built?

In 2012, plans for a multi-purpose motorsport center project near Zagreb were shown to the FIA and Ecclestone by the Croatian government.
The circuit, designed by Tilke, was originally meant for World Championship, GT1, WTCC, Moto GP with also chances to extend the license to Formula 1.
The project became cold, probably for lack of private investments, and never reopened, until today; thanks to better financial conditions for Grand Prix hosts, the project will be relaunched to be added to the circuit database from 2023.

When was its first Grand Prix?

It will be the first ever Formula 1 race on this racetrack.
It will rotate with Grobnik for the final race spot, assigned to Croatia, in the F1 European Series calendar.

What’s the circuit like?

Clearly inspired by the COTA, also designed by Tilke, it has a squared starting/finishing section, with medium-length straights and 90° corners, followed by a longer main straight bit, which is also the best overtaking spot.
The middle sector is the most interesting one, modelled as the American circuit on the high-speed Becketts sequence at Silverstone.
Based on the success of the Texan track, expectations are high also for this one.

Where is it located?

In Zaprešić, just outside the capital Zagreb, around 30km north of its airport. (+ 45°53’34”, + 15°49’41”)
