My Proposal – Technical Regulations – Chapter 15

ARTICLE 15: MATERIALS

  1. Definitions
    1. Commercially Available material
      A material that:
      1. Is available on a non-exclusive basis and under normal commercial terms to all Competitors.
      2. Is not supplied to a specification with a primary aim of improving the baseline mechanical properties.
      3. Has no restrictions or agreements in place that prevents the supplier from openly marketing it.
    2. Shape Memory Material
A material that is configured to move reversibly between two (or more) different shapes when it is subjected only to a non-mechanical uniform stimulus (thermal, electrical, magnetic, optical, etc.), or exhibits a reversible phase change when subject to an applied stress. For clarity, this does not include consequential geometric changes that result solely from the effects of thermal expansion.
    3. Foil Metallurgy
A process by which a material or component is made by the consolidation of metallic foils (by co-forging, welding etc.) which increases the mechanical properties of the material with respect to those of a bulk material. For this definition, a foil is considered a material with a thickness of less than 1mm.
    4. Metallic Materials Used for Additive Manufacture
A group of materials in powder form used for manufacturing near-net shape components from a digital model processed in separate layers and joined by either selective melting, bonding, or sintering.
  2. Permitted Materials
There is no restrictions in materials used for manufacturing or reinforcing any part or area of the car, provided that they’re not:
    1. Dangerous for people building, assembling and working around the car in any circumstances.
    2. Dangerous for the environment.
    3. The car is able to pass all safety, design and crash tests and assessments 1 month before the first race as per articles above.
    4. Non-commercially available materials are also permitted, as long as they satisfy the 3 points above.
    5. Materials for parts designed or regulated by FIA (i.e. Halo) could be mandatory, pending approval from majority of teams.
