When was the track built?
Inaugurated in 2002, thanks to the initiative of some local drivers who wanted a permanent racetrack in their country, it has been one of the most important in Central America since then.
Thanks to its heritage it has been selected by the new Formula One Organization for an important upgrade and redesign to get the Grade 1 certification, made by me, which host Formula 1 from 2023, while keeping also parts of the original course for other competitions.
When was its first Grand Prix?
It will be the first ever Formula 1 GP in this country.
Guatemala has the eleventh spot in the calendar of the South American Continental Series.
What’s the circuit like?
It lives up to the expectations that its name raises: the new extension up to Turn 5 is almost entirely full-throttle and it leads to the downhill straight, a nosedive 40m drop, ending with the banked stadium hairpin.
The parallel uphill straight brings cars back to the former Pedro Cofiño section, with a slower, twistier and more technical Sector 3 where particular precision is required in the triple corner T15-16-17.
The rainy season could carry heavy showers and storms, typical of this region, that will contribute to make the race unpredictable and epic.
Where is it located?
In Escuintla, around 70km southwest of Guatemala City and its International airport, overlooked by the famous three volcanos “Volcanes de Fuego, Agua y Acatenango”. (+ 14°22’57”, – 90°49’14”)
