The third problem with modern Formula 1 is the lack of diversity.
I know it’s an abused word right now, but I think that in order to create an interesing show, having big differences between one car and the other, a very heterogeneous calendar, where long and fast circuits are mixed with short or technical ones, and the possibility for tracks and chassis to change each season will help in removing that feeling of a predetermined show that we have every Sunday.
Let’s take the example of Red Bull in Mexico, which is a beautiful track. Due to its height and location we know that the Austrian team is the favourite before even seeing the first practice.
This is removing a lot of interest in the event.
I never fully understood why there are so many restrictive rules (like mix/max lenght) for circuits and why the F1 management aims at having the same circuits instead of trying to change year after year.
Even if sometimes we’re told it’s related to safety, that isn’t the reason obviousyly.
We have seen in 2020, due to the Covid-19 situation, some circuits that only few months before would have never been considered for a Formula 1 race, immediately homolgated (i.e. Mugello, Imola, Portimao) to plug the hole in a season dramatically affected by the pandemic.
Why were they never considered in the past and marked as “unsafe”?
Furthermore, when I see F1 cars racing in Baku and Monaco (or MotopGP races at Red Bull ring), and then people considering Assen too dangerous to host a gran prix, I rellay struggle to follow the logic.
In conclusion, technical rules able to give teams freedom to develop and be creative every year and a calendar with different circuits will massively improve the interest and the spectacularity of the Formula 1 circus.
It will be part of my proposal that I’ll share with you soon!
