When was the track built?
Cuba and Havana tried various times to attract motorsport, particularly in the 1950s and 60s, although unfortunately the only occurrence that will remain famous (or infamous) is the 1957 500km race, marked by the kidnapping of Juan Manuel Fangio.
With the creation of a new Formula One Organization and the addition of the Caribbean Series, the country is ready to host the main motorsport category again with a temporary street course, designed by me, around the iconic Plaza De la Revolucion, exploiting its ample spaces for the pit facilities and the surrounding roads to create one of the most unique street courses.
When was its first Grand Prix?
The new circuit will be ready for the new F1 in 2023 and will host the first ever GP in the country.
What’s the circuit like?
It is a unique street track, that sits in the elite club of the “figure eight” layout, as cars will start from Plaza De la Revolucion and come back passing under it.
Furthermore, the main straight of nearly 1 km long with a high-speed bend in the middle, which will guarantee overtaking opportunities, thanks also to its width.
There are various long straights or fast sections and heavy braking zones, with the most interesting turns being the hairpins at T8 and T12.
Seeing cars battling in the super-fast bit between Turn 6 and Turn 8 will surely generate amazing shots.
Set-ups will be low-downforce, similar to Baku.
Racing in December will give nice temperatures and lower humidity.
Where is it located?
Starting line on Paseo Avenue, in front of Plaza De La Revolucion and the Jose Martì monument. (+ 23°08’43”, – 82°23’08”)
