Circuito Vasco Sameiro – Braga

When was the track built?

Portugal’s third permanent circuit and home of the  Clube Automóvel do Minho, Braga circuit was inaugurated in 2003, but its most important area was the karting track.
It has hosted mainly local events until the FIA Grade 3 certification in 2008, which opened the way to Continental sports series.
With the new full refurbishment, designed by me, the permanent circuit will become suitable for Formula One standards, ready for the new 2023 F1.
All facilities will be temporary for the Grand Prix, when the aerodrome will be closed.

When was its first Grand Prix?

It will be the first ever race in this venues; it will rotate with other three circuits of the country.

What’s the circuit like?

The first half up to T10 has kept the overall concept of the original layout, with some adjusted angles of corners and extensions of run-off areas to comply with safety standards.
It is very challenging as corners keep coming and finding the perfect flow is not easy.
After T10 the new part of the track starts, with a downhill banked double corner leading to a tricky braking at T13.
Two small straights followed by insidious decelerations complete the lap.
Overtaking won’t be easy, and drivers will need to be brave in T1 and T15 with some lunges. Car balance will be pivotal to be quick.
Gentle elevation changes make the drive more interesting.

Where is it located?

In Palmeira, near Braga, in northern part of country; the aerodromo is opened only for private flights; the closest airport is Oporto’s one, around an hour driving south.  (+ 41°35’11”, – 8°26’41”)
