When was the track built?
Inaugurated in 2008, designed by Ricardo Pena and part of a complex with karting track, technology park, five-star hotel, sports complex and apartments, it has unfortunately suffered of the financial crisis, despite being certified for Formula One test.
The covid outbreak gave the circuit an opportunity to finally host mayor motorsport events, including Formula One starting from 2020.
For the 2023 season it will use the layout with different turn 1.
When was its first Grand Prix?
The first race in Portimao has been held in 2020, won by Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, who also recorded the pole position; it will rotate with other three circuits of the country.
What’s the circuit like?
The circuit is famous and appreciated by drivers especially because of its frequent and sudden elevation changes, culminating in a plunge down to the final right-hander leading to the main straight.
It is quite challenging to find overtaking spots, even if in a lot of corners different lines are possible.
With the new Formula One organization, the layout with a tighter turn 1 will be used, aiming at increasing the overtake chances at the end of the straight.
Where is it located?
In the south part of Portugal, on the hills north of Portimao; Faro airport around an hour east. (+ 37°13’33”, – 8°37’38”)
