When was the track built?
The idea was launched in 2007, when the political entourage of the city signed a 7 years contract with Bernie Ecclestone.
The plan was to refurbish the area around the marina, giving both the city and the circuit the Monaco vibes, despite being a faster and more modern circuit.
Designed by Tilke, it was inaugurated with the first GP in 2008, but unfortunately it never fully attracted drivers and teams and was left out of the calendar since 2013.
It will make its comeback in 2023, with the new F1 organization.
When was its first Grand Prix?
In 2008, named European GP, won by Felipe Massa’s Ferrari, who was also starting from pole position.
It is one of the eight Spanish circuit that will rotate for spots in the European and World Title series.
What’s the circuit like?
It was one of the first attempts to combine the look and feel of a street circuit, with the high speeds and safety standards of a permanent circuit.
The design nailed it, with various 90° corners, especially in sector 1, typical of a street course, but also with four straight-like sections.
In 2023, with the new technical rules, they should offer interesting overtaking spots for Formula One cars.
Where is it located?
In the city’s marina. The finish line and pit facilities are set on Avinguda de I’Enginyer Manuel Soto, around 20km south of the city’s airport. (+ 39°27’26”; – 0°20’20”)
