Autódromo Internacional de San Carlos – San Carlos

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Fictitious (designed by me) – – © 2022 AllAlongTheRacetrack

When was the track built?

Opened in 1970 as a 2.7km super-fast course, thanks to the endorsement of Johnny Cecotto it captured international attention and, after the extension to the current 4.1km layout, it hosted for few years a motorcycle World Championship appointment, with rumors also of a Formula 1 race.
Due to financial issues and to the suffering domestic economy, it lost its momentum and became venue for local events only.
The new Formula 1 Organization and its eased budgetary conditions helped funding a new extension, designed by me, that will finally bring a Grand Prix in San Carlos, nearly 50 years after the first try.
The important kart circuit will be preserved.

When was its first Grand Prix?

It will be the first ever Formula 1 GP in this country.
It is one of the two circuits in the country that will rotate for the seventeenth spot in the calendar of the South American Continental Series.

What’s the circuit like?

The first sector up to Turn 8 and the final bit, from just before Turn 17, are elements of the original track, slightly amended to improve overtaking and safety standards.
The new section is designed in line with its traits, like the long-radius high-speed Turn 15 and 16, the tight hairpin 11 and the long back straight leading to it.
It’s a complete circuit, where cars will have medium downforce set-ups, trying not to give up too much top-speed.

Where is it located?

In San Carlos, in north-western Venezuela; the nearest International airport is in Valencia, around 100km North, while the capital Caracas is around 250km North-East. (+ 9°39’49”, – 68°33’15”)
