Red Bull Ring – Spielberg

Circuit: Existing
Layout: Actual

When was the track built?

Built in 1969 as the Österrichring, to replace the old and dangerous Zeltweg airfield circuit, it was the location of the Austrian GP until 1987, when it was dropped from the calendar due to safety concerns.
Completely redesigned by Tilke in 1995, it came back as A1 Ring in 1996 but left again due to financial concerns.
Red Bull purchased the circuit in 2004 and completely refurbished all facilities including a race school, auto museum, hotel and a home for Mateschitz’s aircraft collection; thanks to that, it came back as regular appointment for F1 from 2014.

When was its first Grand Prix?

In 1970, when Ickx and Regazzoni’s Ferraris took a 1-2 taking advantage of engine issues of the pole sitter, local hero Jochen Rindt.
It will rotate with Salzburgring for the Austrian spot in the F1 European Series calendar.

What’s the circuit like?

Despite being just above one minute lap time, it is a very complete racetrack, with first half rewarding power, as the cars face three straights separated by two uphill tight turns.
The downhill section has more corners, with a series of quick corners where drivers can’t take no rest.

Where is it located?

In Spielberg, n the Styrian region of Austria, around two hours away from Vienna and its airport. (+ 47°13’22”, + 14°45’29”)
